Horticultural vermiculite is an excellent soilless planting medium. Its non-toxic sterile and moist resistant properties make it the ideal medium for seed germinating. What’s more, the material is very lightweight and able to hold water very well.

How to Start Seeds in Vermiculite?

  1. Find a clean, sterile flat or similar container that has plenty of drainage holes and fill with vermiculite or a vermiculite-containing mixture.
  2. Then, water or mist the vermiculite gently, thoroughly moistening it.
  3. Sprinkle your seeds evenly over the surface of the vermiculite, make spacing them far enough apart so that the seedlings will not be too crowded. Overcrowding forces seedlings to become leggy and encourages disease; minimum space requirements vary by the specific type of plant seed.
  4. Cover larger seeds or seeds that do not require light to germinate with a light layer of vermiculite, using just enough material to cover the seeds so that they are not visible. Do not cover very fine, small seeds that require light for germination.
  5. Cover the flat with a glass or plastic lid, or enclose it in a polyethylene bag. This will help to maintain high humidity around the seeds and minimize the need for watering.
  6. Place the seeds in a spot that receives bright, indirect light and has a temperature between about 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit; some plant seeds may germinate best within a different temperature range. Inspect the vermiculite regularly, and mist it whenever the surface of the medium feels dry to the touch.
  7. Remove the lid or bag once seedlings emerge, and increase the amount of light the container receives.
